Dr. Gryskiewicz was inspired to pursue a career in plastic surgery after a six-month trip as a volunteer in San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala. Journeying by Jeep to the remote, guerrilla-occupied mountain regions, he worked around the clock, seven days a week, treating patients plagued with parasites, malnutrition, and tuberculosis. His most moving experiences came while living at the Casa Feliz orphanage, where he worked with the Cachchequal tribe of Central American Mayan Indians. Many of the orphans suffered from cleft lips or palates. The life-changing result from a simple surgical procedure altered Dr. Gryskiewicz’s life as well. Dr. Joe travels annually to South America with the international aid organizations to operate on children with cleft lips, cleft palates, and burns.
